Southern Corn Rust
Confirmed

According to Dr. Heiniger, NCSU Extension Specialist, it is likely that we will have another early outbreak of Southern Rust in corn this season in North Carolina.  We had Southern Rust confirmed in North Carolina last year; the good news is that this has occurred at least a week later than the outbreak in 2014.  The battle against Southern Rust is a race between the rust infecting most of the leaves of corn before R5 and the crop reaching the R5 stage with uninfected leaves. I have attached an updated recommendation guide provided by Dr. Heiniger below.   Last year the disease was not as aggressive compared with prior years and early treatments slowed the spread considerably. As of Friday, July 17th, Southern Rust has been observed in two fields located in Lenoir and Hyde Counties. The downfall is that these fields are in the middle of Eastern North Carolina. Most likely it is in other fields that have gone unnoticed. Growers, now is the time to be scouting your cornfields and determining the action you need to take to protect your corn crop. Please feel free to contact me at (910) 455-5873 or Melissa_Huffman@ncsu.edu Southern Rust Confirmed 2015
