Soil Testing Information

In North Carolina, most soils are acidic and low in nutrients. Good plant growth usually requires the addition of lime and fertilizer. Soil testing is the best way to find out how much to apply. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture offers soil testing and information for both commercial growers and home owners. Soil samples are usually analyzed within about a week, but may take longer from late fall through early spring due to heavy loads from farmers at this time. The next Onslow County office of Cooperative Extension rainbarrel sale will begin on April 14, 2012 and continue while supply lasts. These roughly 50-gallon food-grade barrels come complete with screened inlet, brass faucet, and 1.5-inch overflow outlet. The cost is $50 for a "ready-made" barrel.
