Join us for Cape Fear Creek Week to celebrate the creeks, rivers, and streams in the Cape Fear region!

Cape Fear Creek Week provides opportunities for the community to connect with, celebrate, and care for the local waterways of the Cape Fear Region. Creek Week will be held March 18-23, 2024 with educational presentations, nature hikes, and more.

Cape Fear Creek Week is a collaboration between N.C. Cooperative Extension, City of Wilmington’s Heal our Waterways, Cape Fear River Watch, NC Coastal Landtrust, New Hanover County Soil and Water Conservation District, Alliance for Cape Fear Trees, and NC Coastal Federation.

Monday, March 18th

Walking Tour of Wade Park

Monday, March 18th, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Join NHC Soil and Water Conservation District on a walking tour of Wade Park. Explore this 17 acre wetland and search for the many bird, reptile, and plant species that live in the wetland. We will also talk about water quality and why it is important for those species living in the wetland. This program is geared towards families. The program will be an hour. Tour will be led by Jessica Stitt, Program Coordinator for NHC Soil and Water Conservation District. Click here for more information and to register.

Tuesday, March 19th  

DREAMS Rain Garden Maintenance

Tuesday, March 29th, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Help improve Burnt Mill Creek’s water quality by volunteering at the DREAMS Center for Art Education, a crucial nonprofit supporting over 600 youth annually in Wilmington. The stormwater retrofits and native plants at DREAMS help to capture, absorb, and filter polluted stormwater runoff from entering into Burnt Mill Creek. Volunteers can expect activities like weeding, mulching, and clearing debris in the gardens, including the ‘Secret Garden’ unveiled last year in collaboration with the Coastal Landscapes Initiative. Walking Tour of Pages Creek

1215 Middle Sound Loop Rd, Wilmington, NC 28411 

Wednesday, March 20th, 1 p.m.-2 p.m. Join NHC Soil and Water Conservation District on a walking tour of Pages Creek Preserve. Search for bird species that frequent the area. Learn about the Pages Creek Conservation Plan that was just passed. This plan will help get resources to clean up Pages Creek. Tour will be led by Dru Harrison, Director of the NHC Soil and Water Conservation District and Jessica Stitt, Program Coordinator for the NHC Soil and Water Conservation District. Storm Drain Marking-Leland

Location: Westport Neighborhood in Leland

Wednesday, March 20th, 10-11:30 a.m. Join the Town of Leland and Cape Fear River Watch for this family-friendly service activity of permanently gluing stainless steel markings to storm drains in Leland. Participants will also distribute door hangers detailing the importance of keeping our stormwater free of pollution. FREE, Registration is Required. Age 16+ (under 16, with registered adult). Service led by Marissa Blackburn, Environmental Education Manager at Cape Fear River Watch. Click here to register.

‘The Power of Trees’ Presentation by Alliance for Cape Fear Trees

Location: New Hanover County Arboretum

Thursday, March 21st, 2-3 p.m. On NC Arbor Day Eve, join the Alliance for Cape Fear Trees for a presentation about ‘The Power of Trees.” Executive Director Dan Camacho will speak for 45 minutes about the many benefits of trees, a main one being the protection and enhancement of our creeks and waterways. Friday, March 22nd

Stormwater Infrastructure Walking Tour of Clear Run Branch

Friday, March 22nd, 10-11 a.m. Amber Ellis, Stormwater Engineer with NC State’s Bio and Ag Engineering Department, and Fred Royal, Stormwater Engineer with City of Wilmington, will give an in depth look at retrofit SCMs and a whole system refit including flood plain restoration of Clear Run Branch in Wilmington. Saturday, March 23rd

Brunswick Nature Park Hike

On March 23rd, from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m., The Coastal Land Trust will have an educational hike at Brunswick Nature Park in Brunswick County. This hike will focus on Town Creek, saltwater intrusion, and human impacts on our waterways. This event is a part of the New Hanover County Creek Week. Water and snacks will be provided for participants. Participants will also receive parking directions after signing up. Cape Fear River Watch, Kerr Ave Cleanup & Business Outreach

On March 23rd, Cape Fear River Watch is teaming up with New Hanover County 4-H for a cleanup along Kerr Avenue to protect nearby streams.
