Gaston County offers a variety of food preservation, nutrition, and wellness workshops designed to help you eat smart and move move everyday. Workshops are offered regularly throughout the year, including both in-person and virtual sessions. The majority of workshops are offered at no cost to participants – visit our Events Calendar or contact Linda Minges for more details.

Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)

Home Canning

Wanting to get started with home canning or perhaps it’s been awhile since you’ve canned? If so, contact Gaston County for the most current information and canning practices such as:

  • Annual testing of dial gauge pressure canners
  • Overview of home canning and equipment, supplies needed
  • Basics of water bath and pressure canning
  • Canning particular foods:  jams/jellies, pickles, vegetables, meats

LIFT:  Lifelong Improvements through Fitness Together

Our newest program designed to help older adults improve strength, mobility, and build healthy eating habits. LIFT is an 8-week strength training program held in-person. Participants meet twice a week for 1-hour sessions.

This program is designed to help you:

  • Improve everyday fitness

  • Eat smarter
  • Build healthy habits to last a lifetime

  • Increase your self-confidence
  • Handle stress and relax
  • Feel better and take charge

Savvy Citizen:  Gaston County Podcast

Savvy Citizen Gaston County PodcastPodcasts have become popular and a convenient way to listen to news, talk shows, sermons, and other timely information.

Exactly what is a podcast?  Simply stated, it’s a recorded audio session (usually no video) that you can listen to on demand. Podcasts can be downloaded from online sources, such as Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and Audible.

Family & Consumer Science Agent, Linda Minges, is excited to partner with Gaston County’s Podcast, Savvy Citizen, to provide a monthly podcast on current health and wellness topics.


About Savvy Citizen:  
While the podcast addresses topics important to residents, Savvy Citizen also provides a window into current happenings in Gaston County. This helps residents put a voice to a name and a way to forge a better connection between citizens and civil servants.

Triple P is currently used in 25 countries and has been shown to work across cultures, socio-economic groups and in many different kinds of family structures.
