Food Product Recalls
Have you noticed many food products being recalled in the news lately? Wondering what the classification means? The USDA uses a 3 tier classification system. Recalls are labeled as a Class I, II, or III.
Class I- Highest Risk
This is a high or medium health hazard situation. There is reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious adverse health consequences or even death.
Class II- Low Risk
This is a health hazard with a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.
Class III- Marginal risk
In this situation the product will not cause adverse health consequences or the risk is negligible.
Recalls can happen due to misbranding, contamination with bacteria or foreign objects, or unlabeled allergens. When a product gets recalled you can find information all the information to keep you safe on the USDA website. Important information including states the classification of recall, reason for recall, states the product was sold in, product names, pictures of the product labels, and much more. There are also dates for when the recall is still active.
