Mars base camp STEM kit

October is the month every year we get to complete the 4-H STEM Challenge. This year’s kit is called ‘Mars Base Camp’ and was developed by the National 4-H Council, Google, and Virginia Cooperative Extension.

Due to COVID-19, we will be handing out family-sized kits so that you can complete the ‘Mars Base Camp’ activities at home! Each kit has four different STEM activities with all materials included (except for a computer for one activity).

Pick up will be Wednesday, October 14, 2020, from 4–6 p.m. at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, EBCI Center located at 876 Acquoni Road (across from Dora Reed Head Start). This will be a ‘carhop’ style pickup where you park your car and we will bring your kit out to you!

Registration is required to get a kit! Register online!

Here are the ‘Mars Base Camp’ activities in the kit:

1. Landing Zone Surveyor – In this activity, youth will learn about the surface of Mars and try to ‘land’ a small object on the ‘surface.’

2. Red Planet Odyssey – In this activity, youth will build a rover that actually drives and move it from one place to another.

3. Crop Curiosity – In this activity, youth will play a card/board game about eating food on Mars.

4. Insight from Mars – In this activity, you can use a computer (computer not included) to learn about Google Scratch coding and create something to present about what they learned on their Mars journey.

More information about the 4-H STEM Challenge can be found on the 4-H website or by contacting Sally Dixon at salldixo@nc-cherokee.com or 825-359-6936.
