Agriculture & Food: Field Crops Field crops -- tobacco, soybeans, corn, cotton, peanuts, and small grains are important to the local economy in Onslow County. In spite of the federal tobacco program buyout, farmers continue producing flue-cured tobacco on over 1500 acres in the county. Tobacco is the number one cash crop in Onslow County and, all the field crops contribute over $15.5 million annually to the Onslow County economy. North Carolina Cooperative Extension helps by providing growers with the latest research-based information and recommendations on the best varieties and production practices for the county's conditions. Extension also helps growers comply with changing regulations, investigate new higher-value opportunities, develop solid business plans and explore marketing options.
